Disability Prevention Week kicks off July 18
LINGAYEN–The provincial government, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) in partnership with the Federation of Persons with Disabilities of Pangasinan (PFWDP), has lined up various activities for the weeklong observance of the 33rd National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week (NDPRW) on July 17-23.
With the theme “Making Rights Real for Filipino with Disabilities”, this year’s observance calls for public awareness and support from various sectors to acknowledge the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as mandated by Republic Act 9442, known as Magna Carta for Disabled Persons.
The provincial government vowed to look into the PWDs’ privileges for special discounts on groceries and in drugstore purchases.
RA 9442 mandates that PWDs are entitled to at least twenty percent discount for the purchase of medicines in all drugstores and at least five percent discount on basic commodities per guidelines set by the Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
To strengthen the implementation of special discounts for PWDs, PSWDO Chief Emilio Samson said they will monitor various commercial establishments located in the towns of Lingayen, Rosales and Urdaneta City on July 20-21.
The activity will be joined by members of PFWDP and some partners from the media.
Meanwhile, a study tour to the Nueva Ecija Association of PWDs Cooperative (NEAPWDC) in Nueva Ecija and the National Cooperative Center for PWDs in Pasig City is scheduled on July 27 and at the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) in Quezon City on July 28.
The study tour, Samson said, aims to expose PWDs to possible livelihood opportunities towards the eventual establishment of local cooperative for PWDs in Pangasinan.
One possible cooperative that may be replicated in the province is the NEAPWDC, a supplier of school chairs to the Department of Education.
Samson said the provincial government has allocated one provincial tourism bus to ensure that participants are safe and comfortable during their tour.
PWD sectors in Pangasinan expressed their gratitude to Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. for supporting their various advocacies and for giving them special attention.
Under the administration of Espino, Pangasinan hosted the 12th Special Olympics Philippines (SOP) National Games in 2009 for the first time and held the first Provincial Paralympics in 2010.
