Given the uncertainty whether the damaged school buildings could be repaired in time for the opening of school year, Gov. Amado Espino Jr. is set to request the Department of Education to postpone the scheduled opening on June 10.

Two days after Typhoon ‘Cosme’ exited, Pangasinan II Division Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio reported to the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council that all public school buildings in her division were all severely damaged by the typhoon.

Initial reports received by the PDCC listed 605 public school buildings to have been totally destroyed.

Most of the reported damaged school buildings lost their roofs and their walls have collapsed.

While the governor has given the repair of school buildings a high priority, he remains unsure whether the need repairs could be completed in time for the opening of classes.

The governor has made representations before the National Disaster Coordinating Council and Malacanang for added assistance for the immediate repair and rehabilitation of damaged school buildings.#
