Manaoag bursar given ultimatum
MANAOAG – The former municipal treasurer here was given a final ultimatum to return P1.4 million of missing funds or face criminal prosecution.
Councilor Jeremy Rosario said Mrs. Merlita Soriano failed to meet the February deadline given her to return the funds she reportedly absconded with.
Although Mayor Napoleon Sales already relieved Soriano as municipal treasurer the latter can still be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for malversation of public funds, Councilor Rosario said.
“In my view, the two-week period that we have given Mrs. Soriano to settle the malversed amount is already too much. We really have to make our move in case she cannot beat the new deadline,” Rosario said.
Rosario said he believed that the Sangguniang Bayan had already given her enough leeway to settle the amount she absconded but she has not given any indication that she will act.
Soriano’s case was not the first time.
The former municipal treasurer whom Soriano replaced also absconded with P7 million of municipal government’s money.
“If we will not act fast, we would be blamed by our townmates for not protecting their money,” Rosario said. – APE
