ALAMINOS CITY—The Hundred Islands will soon have an added attraction – an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The pool, now under construction, is expected to draw in more tourists, said Mayor Hernani Braganza.

The swimming pool, a project funded by the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA), is built at the Lucap Wharf, beside the new Alaminos City Welcome House in Lucap, the jump off point to the Hundred Islands.

Braganza said PTA General Manager Robert Dean Barbers fulfilled his promise to bankroll the construction of the swimming pool.

An executive order issued by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo three years ago paved the way for the transfer of the management and supervision of the Hundred Islands, listed as one of the country’s protected areas, from the PTA to the local government.

Once completed, the swimming pool could be the venue for night swimming by tourists booked in hotels and inns in Lucap, Braganza said.

The pool will also serve as a training venue for the city’s swimmers who will compete in regional and national events.

Meanwhile, Braganza announced that 45,079 tourists have been recorded at the Hundred Islands from January to March this year.

The biggest number of tourists at 19,388 came in March, the start of the summer season.

There were 14,826 arrivals in January and 10,805 in February.

Of the three-month total, 35% were foreign tourists, including Korean, Japanese, Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Europeans and balikbayan.–LM
