Survey of Sual Port starts
LINGAYEN—A seven-man technical team from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) arrived last week and immediately started a technical surve of the development plan of the proposed Sual International Shipping Port.
The PPA team, headed by Leonardo Protacio, met with Governor Amado Espino Jr. at the Urduja House where the latter requested the group to complete the survey and plans within one month.
PPA Northern Luzon port manager Silverio Mangaoang Jr. said the group started its three-day topographic and hydrographic surveys on March 4.
The survey will determine which part of Sual Bay is most suitable and feasible for the international seaport.
The preparation of the detailed engineering plan will be done after the survey,
Protacio said Sual was selected the best location for the project because of its deep seawater.
Ocean-going vessels use the Sual Bay today as sanctuary whenever there is weather disturbance in mid-sea.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo earlier pledged to release an initial P100 million to jumpstart the development and construction of the project.
Espino said the seaport is one of his long-term mega projects that could transform Pangasinan into a premier province.
He asked the PPA to include the provision for shipbuilding repair of deep-sea fishing vessels in the project design.
The international seaport, a joint effort of the provincial government, the local government of Sual and the PPA, is targeted for completion in three years at an estimated cost of P400 million.–LM
