THE University of Luzon Golden Tigers, representing Dagupan City and Region 1 in the 62nd National Students’ Basketball Championship in Cebu City last February 24 to March 2, finished among the top four teams in this prestigious collegiate tournament.

After facing tough opposition from the University of Visayas in their initial loss, the Dagupan City government-backed Golden Tigers of Councilor Chito Samson made a strong run all the way to the semi-finals, defeating University of Perpetual Help of Laguna, 108-77 then followed this up with a win over St. Vincent de Paul College of Surigao 104-83 to book a quarterfinal seat.

In the cross-over quarterfinals, the Golden Tigers ambushed hometown team Asian College of Technology of Cebu, 104-102, to prevent an all-Cebu semi-final cast.

UL faced Southwestern University, which later bagged the championship, in the cross-over semi-final and lost in that tough fight where the Cobras overtook the Golden Tigers only in the last 50 seconds of the game.

Marbin Macalalad, the wily point guard was named part of the mythical five, topping the assist and scoring departments.

During the awarding ceremonies and dinner tendered by the host city, Basketball Association of the Philippines’ president Prospero “Butch” Pichay announced that for finishing in the top four of this strong tournament, University of Luzon will be invited to participate in the Asian Universities Basketball Championship (AUBC) slated June 20 this year in Manila.

Pichay is also considering organizing an invitational collegiate tournament in Dagupan to be participated in by teams from Manila, Cebu, Baguio and the city’s local talents.#
