Flores wins in Lingayen
AS IF his convincing victory last February 17 was not enough to convince his fans and rivals that he is the king of Pangasinan amateur cycling, Mangaldan rider Ariel Flores proved anew his supremacy in the province’ road races by conquering the Lingayen Cycling Challenge held February 24.
Flores outsprinted archrival and breakaway partner Ryan Cantor in the last 300 meters to pocket the P5,000 top prize.
The 18-year old Cantor, who is being hailed as a new cycling sensation from San Manuel, faded at the homestretch to finish second and earned P4,000.
The duo broke away from the eleven-man lead pack after the two of three rounds and clocked the 110-kilometer flat trek in two hours, 50 minutes and eight seconds.
Flores townmate Rex Carino came in third for P3,000 while two other Mangaldanons, Adrian Malanum and Benigno Molina, made a good showing by landing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Rounding up the top ten were Bengson Merlin of Rosales, 6th; Generalismo Memita and Jim Arco of Lupao, Nueva Ecija, 7th and 8th, Ruben dela Cruz of Natividad, 9th; Reynaldo Calosa of San Jacinto, 10th. The race had 49 finishers.
The prizes and trophies for the event, sponsored by Mayor Jonas Castañeda, were handed by the host town’s municipal administrator Polly Baltazar, who flagged off the 64 contestants assisted by municipal consultant Engr. Gerardo Tiangson.
“Because of the success of the event, there’s a big possibility that a similar race will be held again end of this year or early part of next year,” said Baltazar.
