SAN FABIAN-The Pangasinan Mayors’ League are standing by embattled President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who is facing a strong and growing call for her resignation.

Meeting on Wednesday in this 4th District town represented by former House Speaker Jose de Venecia, the group confirmed that they continue to support Arroyo.

“She is our president,” said San Fabian Mayor Mojamito Libunao, who also sponsored the league’s resolution, signed by 28 mayors, spelling out their support.

In an interview with The PUNCH, Libunao, however, was quick to clarify that “this doesn’t mean that we are not supporting our congressman, the former speaker.”

“There is no inconsistency at all because they are not aspiring for the same goal,” added Libunao, secretary-general of the league.

De Venecia, earswhile long-time ally of the President, is now among those who are critical of the Arroyo government following his ouster from the House of Representative’s top post as a result of the expose of his son and namesake Jose III on the anomalies in the controversial NBN-ZTE project.

The resolution was approved by 28 mayors present in a meeting presided over by Sta. Barbara Mayor Reynaldo Velasco, the league’s executive vice president.  There are 44 municipal mayors in Pangasinan.

In a related development, Pangasinan Board Member Amadeo Espino said 1,089 residents in Bautista town have signed a manifesto supporting Arroyo.

CHURCH GROUP

Meanwhile, a church group lead by Reverend Father Oliver Mendoza, head priest of San Fabian’s parish, is organizing an indignation rally against the President tentatively on February 29 at 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. in Dagupan City, the seat of the Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese headed by Archbishop Oscar Cruz.

The Church-backed group AGCO, a Pangasinan word which means “to reject”, has been actively leading anti-corruption and anti-charter change rallies in Dagupan City.

Mendoza said their rally this time shall be anchored on the theme “Agco ed tila! Ako’y Pilipino, Nagsasabi ng Totoo”.#
