PANGASINAN has sent P1 million each to the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, both in northern Mindanao, that were ravaged by flooding due to Typhoon “Sendong” on December 3.

Gov. Amado Espino Jr., speaking at the ‘Media in Action’ forum of the Pangasinan Press Club last week, said the financial help was in response to the appeal of officials of the two cities where the death toll as of December 20 has reached more than 1,000 and thousands of families displaced.

Espino’s Executive Assistant Ramon Morden and Provincial Information Officer Butch Velasco flew to the two cities to personally hand the donation to Cagayan de Oro City Administrator Criselda Joson and Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz.

The two Pangasinan representatives reported that the officials of both cities thanked Pangasinan, the first local government unit in northern Luzon to extend assistance to them.

The fund, with approval from the Sanggunian Panlalawigan, was sourced from the provincial coffer.

Meanwhile, Espino assured Pangasinenses that the provincial government continues to work on programs to prevent a similar tragedy of the same magnitude occur in the province.  He said the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) is continuously updating its disaster-prevention program with training and information campaign.

Espino noted that the last time a major flooding struck Pangasinan was two years ago when an unprecedented volume of water was released from the San Roque Dam at the height of Typhoon “Pepeng.

Protocol for the release of water has since been modified with closer coordination among the private and government agencies involved.
