Villasis’ Talong Festival now in DOT calendar
VILLASIS–The Talong Festival here held every end of January has been officially included in the calendar of the Department of Tourism as one of the major tourism events in the country.
“We are happy because we got the nod of the Department of Tourism only after two years of the festival,” said Mayor Nonato Abrenica, who initiated the launching of the Talong Festival.
He thanked the people of Villasis, including balikbayans who have been supporting the event, which now serves as the highlight of the town’s annual fiesta.
The Talong Fstival is aimed at promoting the town as eggplant capital of Pangasinan, with more than 400 hectares of land devoted to the crop.
Last year, Villasis produced 120,000 metric tons of eggplants which it sold at the town’s vegetable “bagsakan”.
Abrenica said they are now developing an eggplant variety that can be raised all year-round to boost the income of farmers.—LM
