Alcala eyes 2 Guinness records
MOVE OVER DAGUPAN
ALCALA – Without intending to spend a single centavo, the town of Alcala aims to etch its name in the Guinness World Records when it puts up the world’s longest grill unit and the world’s barbecue grill on April 29 this year.
Mayor Manuel Collado said the activity will be among the main features of the Alcala town fiesta in honor of the Holy Cross, the town’s patron saint, May 1 to 3. It will be highlighted by a grand reunion of overseas residents of the town.
He said overseas residents of Alcala, who wanted a different kind of activity never before experienced by them, suggested the quest for two world-records to make their brief homecoming to their hometown more memorable.
“Not a single centavo will be spent by the municipal government in these two world record- breaking bids that could spur tourism, and put the cooperation and industry of the people to real test,” Collado said.
The Rang-ay ti Alcala (Progress of Alcala), headed by Ed Tolentino, is coordinating the homecoming of the overseas residents of Alcala. He said preparations for the reunion have started as early as the first quarter of last year.
The overseas Alcalenians reportedly agreed to bankroll the effort to break the world’s longest grill record which stands at 33 meters being held by Germany and the world’s longest barbecue grill event record held by Dagupan City at 2.2 kilometers.
Aside from eyeing two world records for the municipality, the activity will serve as a fund-raising drive for the livelihood projects for its less fortunate citizens.
The overseas residents of Alcala will be buying the grills at U.S. $100 per grill measuring three meters long. Some 1,000 overseas sponsors are expected to pitch in.
“To date, there are now at least 975 sponsors,” Collado enthused.
Collado, a first term municipal mayor, said the town will build a 150-meter long grill, more than twice longer than the existing world record registered by Germany.
Then, they will put up a three-kilometer barbecue grill in order to beat Dagupan City’s 2.2 kilometer record.
“No. We are not competing with Dagupan in the barbecue event. We are only trying to make a name for our municipality and our people,” Collado said.
