THE University of Pangasinan Webczars’ fiery rally fell short Sunday night giving Capitol Team another victory, with the scoreboard closing at 98-92, during the ongoing first Martina Farm Open Basketball Championship held at Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen.

The Capitol’s third victory without defeat makes them the frontrunner in the five-team tourney while the Webczars’ loss drops them into a tie with St. Lucy’s Cataract Eye Care Center (SLCECC) with an identical mark of two wins and one loss.

SLCECC and Webczars clash today at 5:00 p.m. in the same venue to break the deadlock. The winner in this match grabsthe solo second spot for the double-round-robin system of the league.

The Webczars trailed SLCECC by 13 points at the half, 57-44, with six-foot-six pivot man Jayson Tiongson and power forward Richard dela Cruz doing the bombs combining 24 points.

But the ‘never say die’ boys of Cesar Duque slowly and surely crept close in the third period with Bugallon son Bryan Santillan  doing the slash in the absence of point guard Albert Carcha, converting nine points to cut Capitol’s lead by six, 72-66.

The Webczars, mentored by Jay Ronquillo, got back on track at the start of the fourth and final period and tied the game twice, 78-78 with 6:52 minutes left and 80-80, 5:51 remaining, forcing Capitol’s coach Boy Romero to call a timeout.

The timeout paid off with Capitol orchestrating a 9-0 romp and never looked back up to the endwith Tiongson sealing the game by converting two free throws.

Dela Cruz scored a team high 19 points; Tiongson had 16; and Leonardo Gubatan, despite having three fouls including a technical call slapped on him by referee Jorge Ceralde in the first quarter, contributed 10.

The Webczars had four players scoring in double figures with Santillan pumping in a game high 33 points. Renato Soriano had 14 and Gian Carlo Cruz and Michael Loresco contributed 13 and 12, respectively.

In the first game of the day, title-contender St. Lucy’s Cataract Eye Care Center plastered Our Lady of Purification Doctors Hospital, 127-79, to post there second win after three outings. —JAGJr.
