LINGAYEN–Gawad Kalinga (GK) and the provincial government will provide more than a thousand new houses for the province’s poor through“sweat equity” of the beneficiaries.

Engr. Alvin Bigay, provincial housing and homesite regulation officer, told The PUNCH that about 1,048 housing units will be jointly built at a 10-hectare lot within the 30-hectare property of the provincial government which has been allocated for the homeless.

The beneficiaries, who will be selected from this capital town and neighboring municipalities, will be required to render 200 hours of construction work.

Bigay said 150 families have so far already been identified.

GK will source the materials from its donors while the provincial government has allocated an initial P5 million for the housing project in its 2008 budget.

GK officials led by Charito del Rosario, head of the partnership management group, and Lyndon Bonson, regional head of the GK for Northern Luzon, visited the home site last December 20 and discussed the project.

The provincial board passed last Monday three resolutions related to the project.

These include the identification and designation of the 10-hectare area as the housing project site; institutionalizing the Abong Tayo Eletneg Program (ATEP)-“We Build Homes Together”, a local housing initiative for the homeless and underprivileged families in Pangasinan; and giving Gov. Amado Espino Jr. authority to enter into an agreement/partnership with the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. for the establishment of the of GK-ATEP sites in the province.

The Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. is a private group involved in building Christian communities through housing projects coupled with values formation and skills training for sustained development and social transformation.#
