Year of promises, promising year

Once again we say goodbye to another year.

It was not the best of years for the country nor the province in terms of leaps in economic development at the ground level despite the national government’s repeated boasting of stable and improving   indicators.

In fact, 2007, was one marred by political instability and fears over drastic admi-nistrative policies at the national level.

But it was a good year in terms of opening new possibilities given the mid-term elections for the Senate and House of Congress as well as for local government positions in May. There too was the barangay and Sanggunian Kabataan polls in October.

As in all other elections past, countless promises were dished out during the campaigns. And again during the victory speeches of those who got the majority of the people’s vote of approval.

Our local officials – the new faces, re-elected ones, comebacking public servants – have all by now warmed their seats.

It is time to get some real work done and making good all those promises.

Developments at the local level, at the frontlines, have time and again proven to be of bigger significance. Local officials have in their hands the power and the responsibility  to carry out  the  more meaningful improvements in people’s lives even as the capital finds itself in quandary.

The clock for their three years of service is ticking. Time will go fast even as improvements go slow.

But we continue to hope and put our faith in the system and in the local leaders.

Hope and faith, after all, are at the core of new beginnings.

And so we welcome 2008 with optimism. We look at it as a promising year ahead for all of us.
