ANTI-DRUG BIKEFEST

San Fabian son Sherwin Carrera proved to his enemies that he is a sturdy rider to reckon with. He was the first rider to reach the mountain summit line at Sual town.

Caught by four pursuers after five kilometers of chase, he rode alongside them.

He broke off from his breakaway partners six kilometers into the finish and never looked back to arrive all alone and with much to spare to finally wrest the “RD Gen. Bataoil – Jesus Garcia Cup” last Sunday, pocketing the P10,500 top prize and a huge trophy.

A former national team member, Carrera, 23, negotiated the 136.16 kilometers anti-drug bikefest principally sponsored by PNP Region 1 Director Chief Superintendent Leopoldo Bataoil, in three hours, 35 minutes and 23 seconds.

Manaoag sprinter Ericson Obosa outsped the four-man second pack to finish second bagging P7,200 and cellphone unit courtesy of Smart Company plus a trophy.

San Carlenean Enrique Domingo landed third, winning P3,000 and also a trophy, while 2006 Padyak Pinoy king Santy Barnachea of Umingan and San Jacinto promising cyclist Pepito Calosa checked in fourth and fifth to earn P2,300 and P1,000, respectively, and a medal each.

“The race is a clear message that our cyclists have a healthy heart and mind because they are not taking prohibited drugs,” said Bataoil.

“We hope that others, especially the youth, will follow, to get involved in sports like cycling so we can produce other potential athletes in the future to bring honor for our province and country,” he added.

The four were identically timed with three hours, 36 minutes and three seconds.

Rounding up the top ten were: Adrian Malanum, 6th (P900); Reynaldo Navarro, 7th (P800); Rex Carino, 8th ((P700); Rainier Austria, 9th (P600); Elmo Ramos Jr., 10th (P500).

The fourth up to the tenth finishers received a medal each.

In the master-executive category (40 years old and above), 43 year-old and multi-tour veteran Wilfredo Calosa of San Jacinto came in first to bag P2,000 and a trophy.

Villasis ace Lito Rabot finished second worth P1,500 and also with trophy. Mangaldan Olympian Jazy Garcia landed third to net P1,000 and trophy.

Oscar Espiritu and Mon Nicolas, both from San Manuel checked in fourth and fifth to earnP750 and P500, respectively, plus a medal each.

There were 80 starters and all survivors received incentive prizes.

The wheel-by-wheel account from start to finish was aired live over DZRD Sunshine Radio 981 Khz AM. #
