Farmers make money from dukayang
MAPANDAN—For Felipe Ogoy and his fellow farmers, time is gold.
Ogoy said they wake up early every morning to till their farmlands and to gather grass they call dukayang (a type of wild grass for animal feeding), which sells for P20 per bundle.
Ogoy, 48, a farmer since he was eight years old, said he and the other farmers in the barangay sell dukayang almost everyday and make good money.
When supply is scarce, the prices can go up to P30 per bundle.
They sell the grass along the roadside in barangay Sta. Maria here where they average ten bundles a day per farmer.
“Marami ang bumibili dito lalu na ‘yung mga nag-aalaga ng kalabaw, baka, kambing o kabayo (a lot of people buy, especially those who raise carabao, cow, goat or horse),” he said.
He said this is a good side business while waiting for their corn or rice to mature.
“Sayang naman ang oras at nalilinisan pa namin ang bukid (With this we are not wasting time and we get to clean our farms,” he added.–CSR
