1st firecracker injury listed in Pangasinan
THE first reported firecracker injury in the province this year involved a 36-year old man from San Fabian who lost two fingers on the right hand when a powerful “Super Lolo” he lit exploded prematurely.
Authorities at the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC), where the victim’s fingers were amputated last Wednesday, said it is unfortunate that Pangasinan can no longer aspire for a zero-injury record this year under the government’s “Iwas Paputok” program.
Following the incident, Dr. Michael Canto, R1MC spokesman, reiterated the government’s call for people to refrain from using firecrackers for the New Year’s Eve celebration.
Dr. Roland Mejia, R1MC chief, also appealed to Pangasinenses to just use other sound-producing instruments and gadgets in welcoming 2012.
The number of firecrackers injuries recorded last year was significantly lower than previous years after an intensive information campaign launched by the government against use of pyrotechnics.
DAGUPAN
In Dagupan, the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) is rushing the passage of a proposed ordinance that requires identification and designation of “firecracker explosion zones” in every barangay to minimize accidents.
Councilor Jesus Canto, author of the proposed ordinance, said the SP may hold a special session this week for the passage of the ordinance for the mayor’s signature.
Canto said the SP is now coordinating with Dagupan Chief of Police Romeo Caramat Jr. for the identification of the firecracker zones.
