LINGAYEN-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas baptized 820 children in a mass Catholic baptism rite held at the Saint John the Evangelist Metropolitan Cathedral on the eve of the Dagupan City Fiesta last Wednesday.

Villegas, assisted by other Catholic priests, officiated the “Binyagang Bayan” with Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez standing as sponsor to all the children aged six months to six years old.

Villegas thanked Fernandez for “bringing all the unbaptized children to the Church to receive the religious sacrament and become children of God.”

Fernandez, in partnership with the Catholic Church, has been sponsoring the “Binyagang Bayan” for the last five years.

ST. JOHN FEAST

Meanwhile, Villegas urged Dagupeños to imbibe and live out the lessons of their patron saint, Saint John the Evangelist, who was a fisherman before he became one of the disciples of Jesus Christ.

The archbishop underscored the significance of St. John in Dagupan as a coastal city where many residents work as fish farmers.
