UL women’s table tennis team shine among the best

THE women table tennis team of the University of Luzon (UL) proved it is among the best among national-level players when it grabbed the 2nd runner-up position in the women’s category in the 1st Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup Pangasinan National Open Table Tennis Challenge held December 9 to 11 at the Pangasinan State University Gym.

The UL team followed powerhouse Metropolitan Table Tennis Association (METTA), composed of players from UAAP Champion De La Salle University, as champions and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), 1st runner-up.

Espino, who welcomed the athletes during the opening program, expressed elation over the participation of big universities in Manila in Pangasinan’s first open table tennis tournament.

The competition is part of the provincial administration’s sports development program that includes the promotion of table tennis as a major sport.

A facility exclusively for table tennis is now under construction for the proper training of potential Pangasinenses and as a venue for future tournaments.

WINNERS

The UL women’s team is composed of Gelique Montoda, Ro-Ann Laureta, Berlin Kate Bautista, Marife Quidez, Danica Joy Cruz and coached by Benedicto Jose U. Tirante.

Other winners in the competition were:

Men’s division – Champion, METTA; 1st runner-up, Table Tennis Association of North District (TATAND); 2nd runner-up, Ateneo de Manila University.

Men’s Open – Champion, Rodel Valle (ADMU); 1st runner-up, Gil Ablanque (TATAND); 2nd runner-up, Lauro Crisostomo (METTA).

17-under – E Champion, Gil Ablanque (TATAND); 1st runner-up, Mikko Malonda (UP); 2nd runner-up, Walden Ledesma (METTA). (with report from PIO)
