MALASIQUI–The 3rd District’s newly-elected barangay officials, who will assume their posts December 1, took their oath of office Thursday before President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the residence of Representative Rachel Arenas

Arroyo gave the estimated 2,000 barangay officials a short message and was loudly applauded when she greeted them in the Pangasinan dialect, saying, “Congratulations ed sikayon amin (Congratulations to all of you).”

Arroyo has roots in Pangasinan as her mother, former First Lady Eva Macapagal, is from Binalonan.

Alfe Soriano, head of the Liga ng mga Barangay of Malasiqui and re-elected barangay chairman of Palapar Norte, said he felt privileged to be part of the first batch of village officials to be sworn in by the President herself.

“This is indeed a very memorable event for us,” Soriano said.

The 3rd District is composed of Calasiao, Malasiqui, Bayambang, Mapandan, Sta. Barbara and San Carlos City.

Arroyo was in town to join Arenas, daughter of philanthropist Rosemary “Baby” Arenas, in celebrating her birthday.
