Comelec seeks release of teachers’ honoraria

PROVINCIAL election officers (EO) won’t be celebrating Pangasinan Day on Tuesday, November 13.

Instead, they are trooping to the Commission on Election (Comelec) head office in Manila to lobby for the release of unpaid honoraria to teachers amounting to P21.5 million.

Teachers who served as board of election tellers during the October 29 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election have yet to receive even half of their due compensation.

Lawyer Reddy Balarbar, provincial election supervisor, told The PUNCH that the EO sin the 44 towns and four cities here, who have been receiving numerous and endless complaints from the teachers, made the decision to personally appeal to the Comelec head office during a meeting this week.

There are 7,160 precincts in the province and three teachers served in each during the poll.

Pangasinan’s problem is not an isolated one, Balarbar said, referring to the nationwide problem.

The Budget Department has confirmed that the amount they initially released does not cover the full amount due to the teachers.#
