ATO will continue study of Sta. Barbara airport
STA. BARBARA–An official here said the study on the feasibility of operating an international airport in this town will continue despite a directive from Malacañang to build one in Alaminos City.
Municipal Administrator Albertini de Guzman said the study by the Air Transportation Office
(ATO) will push through despite the fact that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself has announced the construction of an airport in Alaminos in her last State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Prior to the SONA, Mayor Reynaldo Velasco had offered his town to host the international airport being in the heart of the province and its proximity to several of the popular tourist destinations such as the Manaoag Church, the beaches in San Fabian, Dagupan and Lingayen as well as the cities of Urdaneta and San Carlos.
“The study will continue and it will be up to the Air Transportation Office to determine its feasibility,” De Guzman said.
Governor Amado Espino Jr. supports Velasco’s position making Sta. Barbara the site for the province’s international airport, making it part of the mega projects envisioned by the national government under the Northern Luzon Agri-business Quadrangle.
The Department of Transportation and Communication will make the final recommendation on whether the project is feasible in Sta. Barbara.
De Guzman said a total of 700 hectares, located in barangay Leet and in adjacent areas are being offered as project site.—LM
