Firms, civic clubs help city’s nutrition program
SEVERAL firms and civic organizations are now lending their support to the nutrition program of the city aimed at building a stronger and healthier human resource base in Dagupan.
Acting City Mayor Belen Fernandez said these groups rose to the challenge of the city government to devote part of their time, money and efforts in helping provide the nutritional needs of children of less fortunate families.
Fernandez’s own CSI Group of Companies was the first to respond to this challenge, followed by ABS-CBN, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club of Uptown Dagupan headed by Dr. Lucy Honrado and Mrs. Edna Torio Gonzales, and others.
Fernandez said nutrition is one of the major programs outlined by Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. and his team when they began their reign in July this year.
ABS-CBN, as well as Kiwanis, has adopted separate barangays where they now conduct their respective feeding activities for malnourished children, among others, she said.
Uptown Rotary tied up with the city government in sponsoring a one-month feeding program for school children of the Bonuan Boquig Elementary School.
City Nutrition Officer Leah Aquino said the feeding shall be done once in two days with the recipient pupils given milk, noodles, porridge, biscuits and others.
The target children will first undergo de-worming and have their weight taken before and after the feeding.
CSI Group of Companies conducted its three-month Breakfast Feeding Project starting in July with the help of multinational company Wyeth.
This was followed by another feeding program providing nutritious food to children diagnosed as severely malnourished from selected barangays, for 30 days.
Noting the support of civic clubs and business houses to the city’s nutrition program, the acting mayor said, “this only underscores the truism that together, we can do much for our less-fortunate people, especially the malnourished children.”
At the same time, Fernandez announced that she is treating more than 2,000 children from various day care centers in the city on Oct. 24 to a free movie at the CSI the City Mall as part of the observance of the International Children’s Month.
This is a yearly activity sponsored by her own CSI Group of Companies which started more than 10 years ago when the CSI Market Square had just been built.
Aside from the free movies, the children will be given free snacks and gifts.—LM
