PART OF CLEANSING, SAYS BATAOIL

FOUR policemen are now in hot water for alleged indiscriminate firing in a resort in Binalonan town on Tuesday, making them culpable for violation as well of the Commission on Elections, (Comelec) gun ban in view of the upcoming Barangay and Samahang Kabataan elections.

Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil, Ilocos Region police director, identified the policemen as PO3 Henry Calibuso and PO1s Jorge Abao III, Jerwin Cabreros, and Zaldy Manzano, all of the Sto.Tomas police station.

Bataoil said the four are the first casualties in the effort to cleanse ranks of policemen of misfits.

P/Sr. Insp. Abubakar Mangelen Jr., Binalonan PNP chief, said erring cops were arrested after the owner of the Puerto Paraiso Resort called the town’s police station to report the indiscriminate firing.

Mangelen said they proceeded to the area and saw the suspects- who were not on duty, not in uniform but were carrying firearms in public and having a drinking spree in one of the cottages.

He said Calibuso and Manzano initially resisted arrest but were eventually handcuffed and taken to the police station.

Criminal cases have been filed against the suspects for indiscriminate firing, illegal possession of firearms and violation of the Comelec gunban.

Bataoil commended the Binalonan police for upholding the law without fear or favor.

Based on records, Calibuso already had a previous similar case and was suspended for 31 days without pay and allowance.

Bataoil said he will recommend sanctions for Calibuso after the investigators shall have submitted their report.

“The Provincial Internal Affairs Service (PIAS) will take charge of the administrative case against the four,” he said.

All their firearms and ammunition, including the confiscated two Caliber .45 pistols, two 9 mm. pistols and one Cal. 38 revolver, are now being subjected to ballistic examination by the PNP Crime Laboratory.—CSR
