Dagupan Council to probe missing steel bars, trusses
Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez has given the green light to two city council committees to investigate and locate the steel bars and trusses retrieved from the burnt Bugnay Market that have mysteriously disappeared since.
Fernandez made the move soon after she received a communication from City Legal Officer George Mejia endorsing the matter of ascertaining the whereabouts of the steel bars and trusses to the city council.
The task of investigating the issue now lies in the hands of Councilor Karlos Reyna, chair of the committee on infrastructure and public utilities, and Councilor Michael Fernandez, chair of the committee on laws and ordinances.
Mejia made the endorsement after receiving a letter from City Engineer Virginia Rosario maintaining her previous stance on the issue that her office was not involved in the demolition of the burnt Bugnay Market.
Rosario pointed to one Robert Sison, allegedly a favored contractor of the administration of former Mayor Benjamin Lim, as the party whom she saw undertaking the demolition.
She had been given 72-hours by City Administrator Alvin Fernandez to submit a report on the whereabouts of the steel bars and trusses.
City Administrator Fernandez tried to investigate the matter when he was still the vice mayor of the city but was hamstrung by the refusal of both the city hall personnel under Lim to make any statement and Sison to appear before the city council during a scheduled investigation in aid of legislation.
Vice Mayor Fernandez said a copy of the contract between the city government and the Bugnay Construction and Development Corporation may reveal some clues about arrangements for the disposal of retrieved materials.
In the previous investigation, some documents showed that the retrieved steel bars and trusses, weighting several tons, all accrued to the city government.—LM
