FOR THE FIRST TIME

SAN JACINTO–Let’s make Pangasinan a model province.

This was the appeal of the House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. to the province’s police command as he reiterated his call to have the drug lords and gambling lords operating   in Pangasinan, particularly within the Fourth District, arrested and prosecuted.

He made the call amid reports that drug addiction and illegal gambling, particularly jueteng, have resurged anew in the province.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly-built police station here, De Venecia said the police chiefs, provincial chief and regional police chief must work together to address the narcotics and gambling problems plaguing Pangasinan.

The inauguration was attended by Chief Supt. Francisco Llamas who represented PNP Chief Director General Oscar Calderon, Police Regional Director Chief Superintendent Leopoldo Bataoil and Police Provincial Director Senior Supt. Isagani Nerez.

In that occasion, Bataoil turned over 66 newly recruited police men and women who just completed their training at the Police Regional Training Center to be assigned in the 48 towns and cities of the province.

“Only when we arrest wrong-doers and those who would prostitute our province and our youth can we make them believe that we mean business,” De Venecia said.

“We are now waving the red flag because the drug menace has become very dangerous and it is affecting our families, youth, children and students,” he said later in a talk to newsmen.

“We already have one of the toughest anti-drug legislation in Asia, We received so many accolades from other governments. What we need is full and effective implementation,” De Venecia added.

On jueteng, De Venecia sought the help of Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz, head of the Krusada ng Bayan Laban sa Sugal (Crusade Against Illegal Gambling).

In the presence of Bataoil, De Venecia told newsmen that the campaign must not only be against jueteng but all forms of illegal gambling.

De Venecia is the second congressman to make public his personal stand against illegal drugs and jueteng after 3rd District Representative Rachel Arenas.

All the other representatives from Pangasinan have yet to pronounce their position on the issues.  —LM
