PhilHealth supports TOFP search

The maiden search for The Outstanding Filipino Physicians (TOFP) received a major boost when the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) formally committed its corporate support to the project.

PhilHealth president and Chief Executive Officer Lorna Fajardo formally turned over the P500,000 check representing the health insurance financial assistance for the project.

The award program is aimed at honoring Filipino physicians who have chosen to stay in the Philippines to serve their countrymen.

The contest is open to natural born or naturalized Filipino physicians, at least 41 years old, of good moral character, integrity and dedication to the medical profession focusing on the impact of their recent and past achievements that led to the advancement in the medical field and national development and public health and welfare, anchored on the Jaycee tenet that “service to humanity is the best work of life.”

Deadline for submission of nominees is September 7, 2007.

In a meeting with the JCI Senate leaders, Fajardo vowed to support the TOFP on a yearly basis even as she committed to make PhilHealth as an institutional partner of the JCI Senate Philippines in the annual search.

“Even PhilHealth needs doctors to stay in the agency. Some have left for greener pastures overseas while others are now taking up a second degree nursing course. That’s why this search for The Outstanding Filipino Physician is very timely to arrest the continuing brain drain in our country,” Fajardo added.

The TOFP was formally launched by the JCI Senate Philippines and the Department of Health last April 26 at the Lung Center of the Philippines in cooperation with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

“It is to the doctors who have opted to dedicate their lives, their expertise and their careers to keep the people healthy and to cure the sick in the country that the latest category of outstanding Filipinos has been dedicated,” said Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III.

Winners will be announced in October.
