Cattle rustling incidents down 50%, says Nerez
LINGAYEN–Half the battle is won.
Cattle rustling incidents in Pangasinan have gone down by 50% over the last three months following the intensive campaign launched by the police force, according to Sr. Supt. Isagani Nerez, police provincial director.
The police’s Special Operations Group focused their efforts on anti-cattle rustling operations after Governor Amado Espino Jr. gave the marching orders to address the situation during his initial week in office.
Nerez also told The PUNCH that media coverage of their operations has also significantly contributed the success of their efforts.
“We have sent the message across,” he said.
The first, second and third districts, particularly San Carlos City and the towns of Malasiqui, Bayambang, and Bani as well as Alcala in the fifth district, are the regular operating grounds of the cattle rustlers.
The police arrested last week four leaders of organized cattle rustling groups, including Romeo Ramos alias Ponso or Niño, suspected leader of the Ramos cattle rustling group, and Arthur Tabor, a native of Bani, suspected leader of the notorious Tabor Group. Also caught were Rey Quitaleg and Alfredo Gonzales, both from San Carlos City.
Last Sunday, Oscar Garcia, 32, resident of Barangay Guelew, San Carlos City and a suspected member of cattle rustlers belonging to Paed Group operating in San Carlos City and other nearby towns of this province was shot dead by an unknown suspect with the use of caliber .45 in front of a mall in the said city.
The police suspect Garcia’s former colleagues were possibly behind the killing. #
