Agri office to take bangus census
Dagupan, the Bangus Capital of the World, is going to make a headcount of its prime product anew.
The City Agriculture Office will conduct a census of bangus grown in fishponds and fishpens to establish the actual production of the industry.
A similar survey conducted in 2004 indicates the city produces 31 metric tons per day, but this number includes fresh and processed bangus that are brought in from other towns and cities within Pangasinan as well as those from outside the province.
City agriculturist Emma Molina said her office estimates the city’s bangus production at about 14 metric tons daily.
The bangus census will complement the plan to label all the Dagupan-grown bangus to distinguish these from those coming from other sources.
“While this planned labeling of Dagupan bangus will be an added cost to the producers, it will give more benefits in the long run because they will have a built-in advantage in the markets since Dagupan bangus has become already a byword among fish lovers,” Molina said.
The bangus census, expected to take about three or more months to complete, will involve surveys and interviews with consignacion, a group of big time fish sellers in the city with 47 members. Of this number, about 38 exclusively sell bangus.
The census will also cover the more than 900 bangus growers in fish pens and another 900-plus in fishponds.
Dagupan celebrates an annual Bangus Festival and listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest bangus grill. #
