Cecid fly infests mango farms in 5 towns

MANGO plantations across five towns in Pangasinan are grappling with an infestation of cecid flies, microscopic pests that harm mango fruits.

Perfecto Liquiran, spokesperson for the Pangasinan Mango Association, explained that these pests, known locally as kurikong, target young fruits and leaves by laying their eggs, resulting in reddish-brown scab-like lesions that lead to premature fruit drop and a decline in quality.

The municipalities affected include Laoac, Mangaldan, Mapandan, Bugallon, and San Jacinto.

Liquiran reported that approximately 50% of mango harvests in each town have been impacted, noting that local growers are unable to prevent the infestation as the small fruits are too delicate to be wrapped in protective paper without risking further loss and stunted growth.

Despite the cecid fly infestation, Liquiran mentioned that mango prices in the market remain steady. The Pangasinan Farmers Association has called for vigilant monitoring of crops and urged immediate pest control measures when cecid flies are detected. (Kim Gealogo)
