THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has issued a Local Red Tide Advisory for the coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda, Pangasinan, after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of red tide toxin (saxitoxin) in shellfish meat samples collected from both towns.

According to the advisory dated January 15, 2026, shellfish samples collected from the affected coastal areas tested positive for saxitoxin following laboratory examination conducted by BFAR Region 1’s Fisheries Production and Support Services Division through its Marine Biotoxin Laboratory.

As a precautionary measure to safeguard public health while awaiting the issuance of a national shellfish bulletin, the public is strongly advised to refrain from gathering, selling, and consuming all types of shellfish, including Acetes species locally known as “alamang,” sourced from the coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda. The advisory aims to prevent possible cases of paralytic shellfish poisoning.

BFAR clarified that fish, squid, crabs, and shrimps remain safe for consumption, provided they are fresh and properly prepared. Consumers are reminded to remove all entrails and wash seafood thoroughly with running water before cooking.

The agency assured the public that it is closely monitoring the affected areas to ensure food safety and protect public health.

Meanwhile, local government units (LGUs) were reminded to uphold their mandate under Section 16 of Republic Act 7160, or the Local Government Code of 1991, which requires them to protect and promote the health and safety of their constituents.

The advisory was signed by Atty. Girly Dela Peña, Officer-in-Charge Regional Director of BFAR Region 1. (Eva Visperas)
