Mangaldan to tighten security at Angalacan River
AFTER TEEN DROWNING
THE local government of Mangaldan is considering stricter safety and security measures at the Angalacan River following the drowning of a teenager in Barangay Inlambo on January 4.
The proposed measures were discussed during an executive-legislative meeting held on January 5, 2026, at the Presidencia de Mangaldan, attended by municipal officials, members of the Sangguniang Bayan, and representatives from various government offices.
Municipal disaster officials said the victim was not a resident of Mangaldan and noted that locals are generally aware of the river’s risks due to its uneven riverbed and changing depth. Despite this, local officials said the incident should not be dismissed, citing an increase in similar incidents in the area.
Municipal leaders raised concerns over public safety at the river and called for stronger monitoring measures, including regular guard schedules, adequate equipment for responders, and standardized uniforms and rescue gear for members of the Angalacan River Task Force.
Additional proposals included the deployment of roving patrols at key entry points along the river to regulate access and prevent unsafe activities, particularly during peak hours.
Local officials said the measures aim to reduce the risk of accidents involving both residents and visitors, as authorities continue to assess gaps in river safety enforcement following the fatal incident.
Recall that in 2024, then-councilor Aldrin Soriano proposed an ordinance limiting swimming at the Angalacan River, The ordinance was passed, but signages have recently been defaced by vandalism. (Ahikam Pasion)
