DA reviews goat project after herd losses

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) is reviewing its goat breeding program at the Pangasinan Research and Experiment Center following the death of more than half of its herd, reportedly due to poor care and maintenance.

A 2024 Commission on Audit report showed that 52 of the 101 Anglo Nubian and Saanen goats died from inadequate feeding and nutrition.

The DA said funding gaps are now being addressed, with animal feed included in the 2025 budget and additional resources proposed for 2026. Under the previous administration, the project reportedly had only minimal funding for feed and veterinary services, without long-term support.

The remaining goats will be distributed to farmers in storm-hit Catanduanes. The 140-hectare facility is also being eyed for use in high-value crop production and as an innovation hub to boost local food output and rural development.

Results of the review will determine whether the program will continue, be scaled down, or be discontinued, while ensuring the facility is maximized for agricultural development in the region. (Ahikam Pasion)
