Driver tests positive in surprise drug check
A van driver tested positive for illegal drugs during a surprise drug testing conducted under the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency’s (PDEA) “Oplan: Pasko” on Monday, Dec. 15, at the Dagupan Central Victory Bus Terminal in Barangay Mayombo.
The operation was spearheaded by PDEA Regional Office 1 in coordination with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 1, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and the Police Regional Office 1–Dagupan City Police Office. A total of 100 public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and conductors were screened during the activity.
PDEA said the initial positive result involving the van driver, whose identity was withheld, is now subject to confirmatory chemical analysis. Pending the final result, the driver underwent a Drug Dependency Examination (DDE) at the Dagupan Testing and Rehabilitation Center to determine the appropriate intervention. His driver’s license was also endorsed to the LTO for proper action in accordance with existing regulations.
Aside from drug testing, the PDEA Special Investigations Unit II K-9 Unit conducted sweeping and paneling operations to ensure that no illegal drugs were concealed in passengers’ luggage and cargo. Information, education and communication (IEC) materials, including comic books, were also distributed to raise public awareness on the dangers of illegal drugs.
Atty. Marvin O. Tavares, chief of the Administrative Division of PDEA RO1, said the operation, under Regional Director Atty. Benjamin G. Gaspi, aims to ensure passenger safety and strengthen anti-drug efforts in the transport sector, especially during the holiday season. (Ahikam Pasion)
