PRO1 warns public against scam using names of PNP officers
THE Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) has alerted the public to a scam involving individuals who pose as Philippine National Police (PNP) officers to solicit money and request online fund transfers.
In an advisory from Camp BGen Oscar M. Florendo, PRO1 reported that scammers have been using the names of ranking police officials to ask for donations, sponsorships, or supposed emergency financial aid.
PRO1 reminded the public that the PNP enforces a strict “No Solicitation Policy” under the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.
“We categorically state that PRO1 does not authorize any person, uniformed or civilian, to solicit money from the public for any purpose,” PRO1 Regional Director PBGen Dindo Reyes said. He added that using police officials’ names to deceive the community is a criminal act that will not be tolerated.
Authorities urged the public to stay alert and dismiss any suspicious messages seeking financial support. PRO1 advised potential victims to refuse the request, save screenshots or phone numbers, and report the incident to the PRO1 Public Information Office or the nearest police station.
The regional police said efforts are underway to identify the scammers and stop similar attempts from spreading. (Eva Visperas)
