PDEA R1 strengthens ties with Dagupan prosecutors, police
TO BOOST CASE CONVICTIONS, ADDRESS FACILITY SHORTAGE
THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Regional Office I (PDEA RO1) is ramping up its collaborative efforts with local law enforcement and prosecutors in Dagupan City, aiming to improve conviction rates and resolve issues with limited detention facilities.
In a recent courtesy visit, PDEA RO1 Regional Director Benjamin G. Gaspi and his team met with City Prosecutor Ma. Victoria Q. Datuin-Cabrera and other prosecutors to discuss strategies for handling drug-related cases.
Topics included dismissed and pending cases, the challenges in managing evidence, the use of body-worn cameras, and the importance of tighter coordination between PDEA agents and prosecutors.
Both parties agreed to enhance communication lines, conduct joint training, and strengthen their partnership to ensure more effective prosecution and higher conviction rates.
Following this, the PDEA team proceeded to the Dagupan City Police Office, where they met with Chief of Police Lt. Col. Lawrence Keith Calub. A key point of discussion was the limited capacity of the PDEA’s custodial facility, which has struggled to accommodate the growing number of suspects arrested in drug operations.
PDEA formally requested the temporary use of Dagupan Police Station’s detention facilities for suspects arrested by their agents, especially in cases where the PDEA holding cells are full.
Calub agreed to the arrangement, provided that a PDEA agent is assigned to monitor detainees under their custody to ensure proper handling and accountability.
Both agencies recognized the significance of this interim solution in maintaining compliance with custodial requirements while alleviating overcrowding at the PDEA facility. (Ahikam Pasion)
