VMUF’s Cano shines in Malaysia archery tilt
SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Leila Jell Cano of Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) brought pride and honor to the country and province when she displayed her remarkable precision skills by capturing three silver medals during the SAAC Archery Championship held September 26-28 at Padang Radia Arena in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
Sanctioned by the SA Archery Club of Malaysia, the two-day event sought to provide a global platform for competition, cultural exchange, and continuous expansion of the sport.
Rivaling against 147 top archers from different nations, Cano put on a stellar performance in the U16 Women’s Category and tallied 643 points to secure two silver podium finishes in Olympic and Qualifying Rounds in a shoot-off against Emmi Humaira Yakimin of Malaysia, who earned 647 points.
In the U16 Recurve Team Event, Cano joined forces with her Philippine teammates Chevy Marian Lim and Shandrie Novencido to clinch the silver medal with 1641 points.
“With these achievements, I’ll continue to develop my skills to compete against the finest archers in the world. This international campaign helped me build mental strength and resilience, especially in dealing with pressure on the big stage,” Cano said.
The young archer is an active member of San Carlos Archery Club under the leadership of head coach Federico Lopez Jr. (Kim Gealogo)
