Dagupan bans new poultry, piggery farms
AN ordinance was passed by the Dagupan Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) declaring a moratorium on the establishment of new poultry farms and piggeries within the city.
The ordinance, authored by Councilor and Majority Leader Michael Fernandez, also provides for the gradual phase-out and closure of existing ones within three years from the effectivity of the law, and encourages the conversion of such facilities into alternative fish production systems, and other purposes.
The measure was passed by the city council in response to growing public health, environmental, and land use concerns arising from poultry and piggery operations in densely populated or ecologically sensitive areas of the city.
According to Fernandez, the ordinance aims to protect community health, preserve environmental quality, and promote sustainable land and water use.
Violators of the moratorium shall be fined P10,000 and their establishments will be immediately closed.
Owners of poultry and piggery farms continuing their operations beyond the phase-out date shall be fined P5,000 per day and their facilities will be closed. (Leonardo Micua)
