TOTAL FOR PANGASINAN REACHED 110,674

THE Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Dagupan wrapped up its 10-day voter registration campaign for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on August 10, registering a record number of applicants at 6,566, which is more than double the target.

Of the total registrants, approximately 70% were in the age bracket of 15 to 17 years old, highlighting strong youth engagement in the election process.

City Election Officer Michael Franks Sarmiento described the high turnout as “unusual” compared to previous voter registration efforts, noting that while there is often a rush on the final day, such a large number of applicants had not been seen before.

Before the start of the registration, the COMELEC Dagupan faced some anxiety about the turnout, particularly due to the series of typhoons and flooding that affected the city in the days leading up to the event.

Dagupan, which has the highest voting population in Pangasinan, now has over 144,000 registered voters, not including the youth in the 15-17 age bracket who are part of the SK registry.

While the turnout was already higher than expected, there were still some individuals who failed to meet the registration deadline.

Sarmiento acknowledged the tight schedule and said this was anticipated due to the limited registration period set by the COMELEC.

Across Pangasinan, a total of 110,674 new voter registrants were recorded.

Sarmiento said all applications will be screened, and any challenges to the registrations will be addressed accordingly.

A voter eligibility hearing will be held on August 25 to process the applications and determine their approval status. This will also coincide with the cleansing of the voter list to ensure its accuracy. (Ahikam Pasion)
