Mejia: No mass firing of R1MC employees

REGION 1 Medical Center (R1MC) Chief Dr. Joseph Roland Mejia has categorically denied claims circulating on social media that job order (JO) employees from Mangaldan were terminated en masse following the recent elections.

In an interview over DWJE, Mejia dismissed the posts as “fake news,” clarifying that the hospital’s renewal of JO contracts is performance-based and adheres strictly to guidelines under the Performance Governance System certification.

“The one who posted that is now being looked into by authorities because he could be held liable for cyber libel,” he said. “Our job orders are based on performance. If you don’t perform, you are not renewed. But you can always reapply,” he added.

He emphasized that R1MC operates independently from political influence, stressing, “We are for service, not for politics.”

Mejia’s son ran but lost in the 2025 mayoralty race in Mangaldan.

R1MC currently has around 200 JO employees — a number sanctioned by the Department of Health. However, Mejia noted that all JO contracts are set to expire on December 31.

“That’s what our President said — job orders will end by December 31 and will be replaced with permanent positions,” he said.

Mejia urged JO workers to continue performing well, as opportunities may arise from R1MC’s upgrading, which could open permanent posts for qualified applicants. (Eva Visperas)
