Fil-Am Friendship Day celebrated in LA

SEVEN days after the US celebrated its 249th birth anniversary, the Philippine-American Friendship Day was held on July 12 in Los Angeles, California.

With the theme: “Celebrating Friendship Through Cultural Diversity”, the whole day event was held at the City of Artesia, Los Angeles County.

Dan E Nino, the former president and public relations officer of the Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA,  said that the celebration gave meaning to the deep historical bond between the US and the Philippines.

He called upon all Pinoys to remember those historical events from the time Spain ruled the country for more than 400 years.

The defeat of “conquistador” during the Spanish-American War ended Spain’s occupation in the Philippines.

The US took the reign of the country for almost 50 years, declaring July 4 as Phil Independence Day. It was eventually changed to June 12 by legislative fiat.

The one-day affair kicked off with a parade by the attendees, who were treated with non-stop entertainment.

Headlined entertainment was provided by young Filipina singers – sisters Almira, Irene, Mylene, and Melina Cercado – who showed their wares in the 12th season of the British Got Talent.  (Leonardo J Galvez, Los Angeles, USA correspondent)
