THE first phase of the two-phase clearing of the Bonuan Dumpsite or 85% of the area has been completed, and operations for the remaining 15% are continuing, according to Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez.

The more than 60-year-old dumpsite will be transformed into an eco-park, with the cleared portion already planted with 1,700 seedlings of coconut, acacia and various flowering trees by 1,500 volunteers during the celebration of the 78th Agew na Dagupan on June 20.

The mayor told newsmen that Dagupan continues to transfer the remaining mound of garbage at the dumpsite to the engineered sanitary landfill in Urdaneta City, which remains open to Dagupan despite closure to other local governments.

Fernandez said that Urdaneta Mayor Julio Parayno III assured her that his city’s dumpsite will continue to accommodate Dagupan’s segregated wastes, and they are trying to procure adjacent lands to expand its engineered sanitary landfill.

Fernandez also said that bringing the wastes to the Urdaneta landfill is significantly cheaper than hiring a private contractor for waste disposal, which cost the past Lim administration more than P1.4 million a day.

To ensure the collection and transport of segregated wastes from the barangays daily, direct to the sanitary landfill, Fernandez is set to propose to the incoming Sangguniang Panlungsod to pass a supplemental budget for the purchase of five more dump trucks for the city’s waste management division.
