THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 1 assured support to fisherfolk and salt farmers in the Ilocos Region during the rainy season

“As fishing in open seas becomes more difficult during the rainy season, we are encouraging our fisherfolk to consider aquaculture as an alternative livelihood,” BFAR Regional Director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan said in a press briefing.

She said BFAR is ready to assist individuals interested in fish farming and provide access to vacant fishponds that can serve as nurseries for raising juvenile fish. Under this program, beneficiaries can sell up to 90% of their harvested fish, while the remaining 10%, within the survival rate, will be collected by BFAR.

BFAR is also extending help to the salt farming sector by providing warehouses for storage to minimize losses due to heavy rains. Under Republic Act No. 8550, the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998, salt production now falls under BFAR’s jurisdiction. (Ahikam Pasion)
