The VP is ready

By Gonzalo Duque

WELL, well, well! It would seem that the oppositionists, especially the ‘regressive ones’ – starring France Castro, who is identified with the Left – want Vice President Sara Duterte tried and convicted right away for alleged crimes or impeachable acts provided in the Articles of Impeachment.

I can only say that the vice president will not be found guilty because she has the number, whether in the 19th or 20th Congress, to acquit her.

The main charge against the VP is the alleged misuse of her confidential funds, although the Commission on Audit has already cleared her of any liability.

The VP, in fact, wants to have a full trial as she is very confident that the charges thrown against her are of no consequence.

Bring it on!

The campaign for the 2028 elections has already started in Dagupan City, although Mayor Belen Fernandez, Vice Mayor Bryan Kua and their incoming nine allies in the city council have yet to be sworn into office and subsequently assume their post by July 1.

The majority bloc in the Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a series of ordinances for the allowances of a number of employees, among them clerks of court; permanent, temporary, job order and consultants (appointed or located) of the city government; garbage collectors; and even athletes, all of which could amount to several millions of pesos.

Cute sila (members of the majority bloc)!

Expect more ordinances to be passed by the bloc before June 30 this year, when the term of six of them expires.

Don’t you think that the people of Dagupan would not see through these last-minute “so-called acts of kindness” done by the majority bloc?

Mayor Belen will just have to veto their ordinances and have them passed later on during the next Sanggunian, where Belen has more than the majority at her behest.

Ano sila, sinusuwerte?

My partner, Ermin Garcia Jr., editor-publisher of this paper, has finally publicly revealed in his column last week that he has Stage 4 prostate cancer.

But instead of lingering in his home or the hospital, he is resolutely fighting and continues to edit the stories of The Sunday Punch so that the paper can come out on time every Sunday morning.

We hope and pray for his complete recovery!
