22 Dagupan athletes seeing action in Palarong Pambansa

THE Region 1 contingent for this year’s Palarong Pambansa, set May 24-30 in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, includes 22 student-athletes from Dagupan City who will compete in eight events.

Before leaving for the games, the athletes were given a warm send off during the flag-raising ceremony at the Dagupan City Plaza on May 18, where they also received their allowance of P4,500 each from Mayor Belen Fernandez.

Sports Development Officer IV Finnela Sim of the Dagupan City Sports Commission said the 22 athletes will compete in chess, arnis, basketball, boxing, taekwondo, gymnastics, wrestling, and swimming.

Most of the 22 athletes won in their respective events in the 2025 Ilocos Region Athletic Association (R1AA) meet, wherein Dagupan’s boxing team was the overall champion with seven of its 10 boxers winning the gold medal, Ms. Sim said.

The athletes are: Thea Amethyst Veterbo (Elementary Chess-Girls); Jeannette Xianne Carpio and Carys Esther Navalta  (Elementary Gymnastics-Women’s Artistic Gymnastics); Lara Faith Concepcion (Secondary Gymnastics Boys and Girls); Marla Tyrone Reyes (Secondary Gymnastics-WAG), Zoe Bettina Ilaw and Lara Faye Concepcion (Secondary Gymnastics-WAG); John Angelo David Fulay (Secondary Arnis); Ian Oca and John Emil Caballeri (Secondary Basketball-Boys-5×5); Jacob Velasco, Christopher Jake Jake Cruz, Franc Eva Crisostomo, Eliazar James Quinto, Christof Mercado and Christian Cruz (Boxing); Jana Leah Juguillon and Princess Sarah Grace Pascual (Secondary Taekwondo); Princess Kaye Biason (Secondary Wrestling-Girls); and Genevieve Barrozo,  Cielo Estrada and Adam Jefferson Juan (Swimming).

The athletes are accompanied to the Palarong Pambansa by Division Sports Coordinator Liezel Cancino, Boxing Coach Ricardo de la Cruz,  Taekwondo Coach Ma. Lolita Morga; Swimming Assistant Coach Lanie Rose Rocaberte and Gymnastics Chaperon Noralyn Navalta.

This year’s Palarong Pambansa draws 15,000 athletes from 20 athletic associations, composed of the 18 regions, the National Academy of Sports, and the Philippine Schools Overseas. (Leonardo Micua)
