Thousands join Dagupan Bangus Fest street party
A brief early evening rain on April 30 did not stop thousands from trooping to the De Venecia Expressway Extension in Dagupan City to take part in the Kalutan ed Dalan and Bangusan Street Party, the penultimate events of the annual Bangus Festival.
Some 1,200 connected metal grills were simultaneously lit up at 5:30 p.m. to grill 25,000 pieces of freshly-harvested certified Dagupan Bangus as well as sausages, pork, beef and carabeef, and various vegetables such as eggplants and okra.
With rice, home-cooked dishes and drinks, brought in by grill participants, i.e., families, office mates, or club members, etc., and their visitors feasted and partied up to the wee hours of the morning of May 1.
Mayor Belen Fernandez along with Vice Mayor Bryan Kua, former Rep. Gina de Venecia, Rep. Christopher de Venecia, Abono PartyList Rep. Robert Estrella and Milpitas City Vice Mayor Garry Barbadillo, a special guest of Dagupan for the festival, and businessman Rocky Vasandani led the ceremonial lighting of the grills.
They were later joined by Las Pinas City Rep. Camille Villar; Bryan Poe, son of Senator Grace Poe and representatives of Senators Bong Revilla, Francis Tolentino and Risa Hontiveros.
Most of the grilling was already done by the time it started to rain after 6:30 p.m.
The Dagupan Police said more than 400 policemen were mobilized to maintain peace and order during the event, which had an initial 50,000 participants that increased until midnight to 600,000 as well-known artists and bands performed on six stages that were set up along the highway. (Leonardo Micua)
