Public told to reports cases of vote-buying, selling
THE Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Pangasinan called on the public to report individuals engaged in vote-buying and vote-selling.
In an interview by IFM News Dagupan, Pangasinan Election Officer Atty. Ericson Oganiza said although warrantless arrest is valid and legal, he advised witnesses to vote-buying and selling to just report the matter to his office or the police, so proper action can be taken accordingly, adding that any candidate found involved in buying votes may face disqualification. No petition for fare hike
THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Region 1 said no cooperative or corporation in its area of jurisdiction has so far filed a petition for fare hike.
LTFRB Region 1 Regional Director Cristal Sibayan said unless a petition is filed and acted upon, the minimum fare remains at P13 for traditional jeepneys, and P15 for the modernized jeepneys. In an interview by IFM News Dagupan, ACTO National President Liberty De Luna revealed that because of the frequent increase in the cost of fuel and space parts, jeepney drivers can now hardly make both ends meet. Vendors grapple with shorter vegetable shelf life amid hot weather
VEGETABLE vendors in Dagupan City are taking steps to prolong the shelf life of their goods, which dry faster amid the prevailing high heat index daily.
Without refrigeration facilities, they resort to whisking water on the vegetables, especially the leafy ones, and temporarily bundling other varieties in plastic to keep moisture in. (Rona Racca)

Fish vendors expect brisk sales before, during Holy Week
FISH vendors in Dagupan are expecting their sales to pick up during the Lenten Season, during which time Catholics usually fast and shun eating meat in observance of their religious tradition.
With the increased demand and short supply of fish, the price of the commodity is expected to increase, which was already felt during the first week of April. (Jam Victorio)

Barangay halls, day care centers to serve as additional voting centers
BARANGAY halls and daycare centers will be used as additional voting centers in Pangasinan during the May 12 election, Provincial Election Supervisor Atty. Ericson Oganiza said, noting that public school facilities are not enough for the number of voters.
At the same time, Oganiza conferred with municipal and city election officers to ensure that contingency plans would be in place in case electricity fouls up in their respective jurisdictions, which could hinder the immediate transmissions of votes. (Mathew Pacheco)

Pangasinan PNP assures tighter security during campaigns
THE Pangasinan Police Provincial Office assured tighter security and police visibility in all areas of the province with start of the campaign period for local candidates.
Police Provincial Director Col. Rollyfer Capoquian said the police is focusing on towns and cities categorized as areas of concern to thwart any untoward incident and ensure peace during the campaign. The police said that they are also ready to provide security to any candidate who is receiving death threat upon his or her request. (Joana de Vera)

PPCRV needs more volunteers
THE Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) needs additional volunteers who will be mobilized as watchdogs during the May 12 election.
PPCRV National Coordinator Dr. Arwin Serrano admitted some of their volunteers are being taken as watchers of candidates. To date, there are 300,000 PPCRV volunteers nationwide, still far from the target number of about 500,000. (Mathew Pacheco)

Heat exhaustion downs 18 persons in Pangasinan
THE Pangasinan Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported that 18 persons in Pangasinan suffered heat exhaustion due to the prevailing daily high heat index, but they did not require hospitalization.
During the program “Pantongtongan tayo” of PIA Pangasinan, Vincent Chiu, Operations head of PDRRMO, said most of the victims are students and construction workers. (Ella Garcia)

Police on alert during the coming Holy Week
THE Pangasinan Police Provincial Office assured security and safety of the public during the observance of the Holy Week, when thousands are expected to visit their hometowns or as tourists.
Police Provincial Director Col. Rollyfer Capoquian said cops will be deployed in places where people usually converge like churches, parks, beach resorts, and transport. For major tourist attractions like the Minor Basilica in Manaoag and the Hundred Islands, the police is aiming to double the number of police officers assigned. (Joana de Vera)
