MAYOR Belen Fernandez said the official confirmation that General Douglas MacArthur landed in Dagupan when he began the liberation of Luzon on January 9, 1945 has “reaffirmed our identity as “a city deeply woven into the fabric of history.”

The confirmation came from James Zobel, official historian and archivist of the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A., who conducted a lecture on the Lingayen Gulf Landing of the Allied Liberation Forces exactly 80 years ago before educators, students of Social Studies and History, as well as officials of Dagupan City at the CSI Stadia on February 24.

“We are not just a footnote in war chronicles—we are a landmark of courage, a testament to the sacrifices of those who came before us, and a beacon of strength for the future generations,” Fernandez said.

She compared MacArthur to herself who returned as Mayor of Dagupan after three-year hiatus with a mission “to pave the way for a better, more progressive city.”

Miguel Villa-Real, Philippine Veterans Bank vice president, said the MacArthur historical and archivist came to Dagupan to right history and  set the record straight that MacArthur actually landed in Blue Beach in Bonuan, Dagupan. (Leonardo Micua)
