MBTF team eyes 1,000 additional scholars
THE scholarship program of the Dagupan City government will be expanded next year if Mayor Belen Fernandez and Vice Mayor Bryan Kua get reelected in May along with their UnliSerbisyo team of councilors.
This was disclosed by Councilor Michael Fernandez during a program he and Kua co-hosted on radio station Aksyon Radyo Dagupan on February 19.
Councilor Fernandez said the plan is to take in 1,000 more scholars in addition to the present 5,000 to give more young, deserving Dagupeños from marginalized families an opportunity to go to college and improve their employment options.
The city’s current scholarship program for 5,000 students amounts to P200 million.
The scholars are enrolled in various collegiate schools in Dagupan City taking up different courses, and a few others in Manila, particularly those who were able to qualify in state-run educational institutions such as the University of the Philippines.
Fernandez said the ordinance providing for the scholarship program mandates the distribution of subsidy to poor but deserving students from Dagupan City for a minimum of four to seven years.
He said Mayor Fernandez and Kua are looking into expanding the scholarship to cover students taking up law and medicine who can later work for the Dagupan City government or be assigned at existing and planned Super Family Health Centers.
A Super Family Health Center was recently opened in Bolosan and another is underway in Malued.
Kua added that the old City Health Office extension clinic in Bonuan Gueset that was phased out by the past Lim administration is now being revived by Mayor Fernandez to serve as the Super Family Health Center for the One Bonuan Barangays (Bonuan Gueset, Bonuan Boquig and Bonuan Binloc).
He said he and Mayor Fernandez also discussed putting up another Super Family Center to serve Barangays Calmay and Carael, and this can be realized if they win another term along with their UnliSerbisyo ticket. (Leonardo Micua)
