San Roque Dam earns hydropower certification
FIRST IN PHL AND SOUTHEAST ASIA
SAN Roque Power Corporation’s (SRPC) hydropower facility in Pangasinan was issued the Hydropower Sustainability Standard Silver Certification, the first in the Philippines and the rest of Southeast Asia.
Located in the municipalities of San Manuel and San Nicolas in Pangasinan, and extending into Itogon in Benguet, the San Roque Multipurpose Project (SRMP) plays a significant role in the country’s energy landscape.
“This recognition is a testament to our dedication to addressing the complex challenges faced during the development of the SRMP,” SRPC Vice President for Corporate Affairs Tommy Valdez said in a statement released on January 20.
“We’ve worked tirelessly to minimize environmental impacts and ensure the welfare of communities affected by the project, and this certification acknowledges our success,” he added.
The Hydropower Sustainability Standard, managed by the international non-profit Hydropower Sustainability Alliance, evaluates hydropower projects on twelve comprehensive criteria. These include assessments on environmental and social impacts, labor conditions, community relations, biodiversity preservation, and governance practices.
The SRMP scored 100% compliance with the Minimum Requirements and surpassed 30% of the Advanced Requirements across 12 key Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria.
Despite facing challenges during its construction, including environmental and social hurdles, SRMP worked closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies and the National Power Corporation, to implement solutions that protected both the environment and the communities involved.
The certification not only strengthens SRPC’s position as a leader in sustainable hydropower but also sets a new benchmark for the energy sector in the Southeast Asian region, the company said. (Eva Visperas)
